Pre-bolusing can be an incredible tool, but is it the end-all-be-all?
Let’s be real, life happens. We eat dinner at a restaurant and we can’t gauge when our food will be delivered. The holidays come up and dinner is at the table before you know it. You’re cooking and next thing you know it your meal is sitting right in front of you. As amazing of a tool pre-bolusing can be, it’s not always practical.
So does that mean we’re meant to just deal with the high blood sugar as a result? My answer, no. Inside of Keeping it 100, we teach our clients the importance of using other tools in collaboration with bolusing strategy. When you have both, you can optimize your blood sugars and overall confidence with diabetes.
Let’s break down our three favorite ways to beat post-meal blood sugar spikes when pre-bolusing isn’t an option.
Tool #1: Throw back a big glass of water
Cliche, I know – but hydration is a severely underplayed card in the game of blood sugar management. Not only does it support digestion, but it’s a no-brainer way to support insulin sensitivity. Next time you’re at dinner and your meal is out before your bolus can hit, take a second to pause and drink a cup of water. You’ll be surprised at the impact it can make in adding intentionality into your meal and improving post-meal blood sugars.
Tool #2: Add some protein, fat, and fiber into the mix
You know we are big fans of the PFF method here inside Needles and Spoons. This combination is the easiest way to take an add IN approach and slow down the blood sugar spike without having to sacrifice the foods you love. Adding in protein, fat, and fiber can help you match your insulin timing with your digestion -even if you miss the pre-bolus! Check out this blog post on more about the PFF Method in action.
Tool #3: Get movin’ and a groovin’
When it feels empowering, movement is a GREAT tool to get insulin working and support post meal blood sugars. Does this mean you should squat after every meal? Please, no. But those post dinner walks with friends, your partner or your dog can bring your blood sugars down nice and smoothly!
