Ever hear the saying, “Diabetes thrives off of routine”? So you try to wake up at the same time, eat the same breakfast and take the same bolus – but lo and behold, your blood sugars don’t respond the same? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you CAN have flexibility in your day while having structure (and predictable blood sugars to go along with it).
Four hours of your morning is 16% of your day – imagine adding that onto your current time in range! Inside this episode, I’m walking you behind the scenes of my own morning routine and how I add in four hours of predictable blood sugars to start my day off strong, without restriction or limitation. And yes, even if you work crazy hours or have a changing schedule, this is for you!
First Morning Habit: Checking my Basal Body Temperature
We’ve talked a lot on this before, being aware of your basal body temperature is not only important for your hormonal health and fertility, but it can also be an indicator for insulin sensitivity shifts. Different temperature fluctuations can indicate shifts in hormone dominance, which can give us insight to how our insulin doses will respond. So, every morning I use my Temp Drop to check my temperature and use that information for basal adjustments, carb ratios and prebolus timing!
Second Morning Habit: Using my Bolus Anchor
Ever hear of habit anchoring or habit stacking – aka attaching a new habit onto a pre-existing behavior? Bolus anchoring is a similar concept to anchor in intentional boluses and bolus timing. Before bolus anchoring, I would make my breakfast and before you knew it, I’d be sitting down with my plate in front of me and taking my bolus without giving it time to kick in. This all lead to a quick spike up in my blood sugars and starting my morning off on the wrong foot. Now? My bolus anchor includes brushing my teeth + taking my prebolus, so I can sit down 15 minutes later and enjoy my breakfast without worrying.
Third Morning Habit: Drinking Water (Before Coffee)
I’m a coffee gal myself BUT after sleeping, we just went 8-10 hours overnight without water. Not only do we need to stay hydrated for proper digestion and energy, but it supports our insulin sensitivity! So every morning while my coffee is brewing, I pour myself a big mason jar full of water and drink it before sitting down with my morning cup of joe.
Fourth Morning Habit: Sitting Down with a PFF Breakfast
My morning breakfast used to be – a cup of coffee and a piece of bread with peanut butter because I thought that less was more. Now, I use my morning to fuel my body with a PFF breakfast (protein, fat and fiber). Not only does a PFF breakfast increase satiety and energy, but it slows down blood sugar spikes to start your morning of strong. My common breakfast: coffee with Vital Proteins Collagen, Kodiak Waffles, egg whites and a side of fruit has over 40 grams of protein, 50 grams of carbs and 21 grams of fat AND keeps my blood sugars stable.
